"During the difficult times is when we find out what we are really made of."
Like everyone else, I have been living in isolation for almost a year. I have been stuck inside with my parents and my dog Echo. I had to shut down my dog sitting business and recently decided to make it permanent. During this time I have been doing some soul-searching. I have been seriously thinking about what kind of life I want to live.
"I have dealt with bullying and harassment, all kinds of discrimination and rejection and it has done a number on my self-esteem".
As those of you who are familiar with my work, I was diagnosed with learning disabilities when I was five years old. I have heard most of my life what I can and cannot do by medical professionals, teachers, classmates, society and family members. I have dealt with bullying and harassment, all kinds of discrimination and rejection and it has done a number on my self-esteem.
To say that I was insecure would be an understatement. For years I tried to do what I could to be accepted, to be approved of. But it was to no available.
Sitting in my house for the past year, thinking about how my life has turned out has placed inside me this overwhelming desire to live a completely different way of life. I know that I am not the only one. I am sure you - or someone else you know - is feeling a very similar need. You would give anything to be able to start all over again.
Well... here is our chance. It's now or never, folks. I wish to share with you the lessons I have learned about how to get this done:
It's All About You
Now I'm not saying that you should become a stuck up snob, full of yourself. What I am saying is that life is about what you make it, not what somebody else says your life should be. Nobody knows what you can do, only YOU know that.
If there is something that you want to do or even if there is a whole big list of things you want to do. I say, Go do it!" Yeah, just do it. If it's a trip you have been wanting to take, make plans on how to make it happen.
Several months ago I watched a movie set in the Australian countryside. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. I took a virtual tour of another area of the Australian countryside - also breathtaking. I googled travel websites pertaining to the areas and bookmarked them. One day I intend on visiting them.
Don't Seek Permission
For the love of all that is holy, don't ask anyone if you should do what you want to do because you know that there are going to be some who are going to be dead set against it. Tell them your plans and if they are willing to help you make it happen, accept it. If they try to stop you, just say "I love you" and walk away.
And finally…
Forgive Yourself
You are not to blame. You may make mistakes. We all have. We are human. If someone doesn't want to forgive you, as much as it hurts, just let it go. You don't need anyone to give you their approval nor their acceptance. Move on. Move on to the life you want. The life you deserve.
You are well worth it. Don't ever forget that!
